Professional Development
We invest substantial resources in growing our people from intellectually curious self-starters into exceptional lawyers who can thrive in a supportive culture.
Our comprehensive training and career enhancement offering combines personal mentoring, career coaching, and hands-on learning with rigorous substantive education, all complemented by our signature academies.
Pre-Qualification
At the start of your training contract, you’ll undergo an initial induction to set you up for success at Latham. This is a great opportunity to connect with fellow trainees and colleagues.
You’ll receive rotation-specific training at the start of each seat, covering fundamental legal topics, knowledge management, library resources, contract drafting, and legal writing. You’ll also attend cross-practice and department-specific training programmes.
Continual Development
Post-qualification, you’ll have ample opportunities to continue learning. You’ll participate in a unique six-week orientation designed to hone specialised personal and professional skills for associate life at Latham. You’ll also have the chance to attend our unique annual TACE (Training and Career Enhancement) Academies throughout your Latham career, including First Year Academy.
Helping You Thrive at Latham
Upon accepting a training contract, you’ll be paired with a trainee mentor. You’ll also attend social events prior to joining, supporting your transition into the firm.
Your trainee mentor will offer guidance and support, while an associate mentor will help navigate your career. A supervisor for each seat, at associate or partner level, will provide regular feedback and guidance.
From day one, you’ll take on significant responsibility and will be actively involved in client calls, meetings, and high-level work. Our trainee development team supports you every step of the way.
Qualifications
To apply, you should have achieved a minimum of AAB (or equivalent) at A-level and be on track to or have already gained a minimum of a 2:1 at degree level.
Trainees will study for the SQE (replacing the LPC). Learn more about the SQE assessments here.
We’ll enroll you in a comprehensive preparation course with BPP, our chosen training provider, and an additional course designed for Latham trainees, equipping you with commercially focused knowledge and skills.
Learn more about our implementation of the SQE here.
Many Latham trainees study non-law subjects at degree level. To support non-law graduates, we’ll enroll them in the Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL), an eight-month course introducing foundational legal concepts. Non-law graduates will then join law graduates for the SQE preparation course.
Latham covers course fees and associated costs, providing a £20,000 maintenance grant for each course. If you’ve completed the PGDL and/or SQE assessments, we’ll reimburse your fees.
Performance Management
Our review process ensures you receive ongoing feedback (mid-seat and end-of-seat) from supervisors and partners, along with comprehensive feedback at each rotation’s completion.
Your supervisor oversees your review process and development, with feedback from other lawyers you’ve worked with on various matters.
